Growing up, my brother and I didn’t have a lot in common. We had an 8 year age gap so often our tastes wouldn’t overlap. However, I will never forget the day that that changed; when he showed me a DVD labeled with the title, Star Wars: A New Hope. He turned on the TV, pressed play and I was instantly introduced to the amazing universe set in a galaxy, far far away. Something about the sense of wonder and intrigue, good vs evil, made for a massive playground of infinite possibilities, it was amazing. Before I knew it I was hooked.
The creative part of me fell in love with Star Wars immediately, for the fact that it opened up a whole new route to create. I would draw, paint, and build starships out of Legos. In this universe of boundless possibilities, I was able to produce my own stories, allowing me to feel like I too was part of this awesome adventure with Jedi, Sith, Rebels, and Empire. It was a playground where I could enjoy myself to the fullest.
The day that Star Wars: A New Hope was inserted into the DVD player my perspective regarding creation changed forever. It inspired me to create my very own worlds and galaxies and most importantly, formed an incredible life-long bond with my brother, something that I hold very dear. That was also the day that I became a die-hard fan of science fiction and the eponymous space operas and to this day, I still love Star Wars with a burning passion that has yet to fizzle out. I may no longer be playing with Legos but my imagination has allowed me to create my own universes populated with my own characters, and it all started with Star Wars.
To this day I think about all of the amazing things in my life that transpired as a direct result of the world of Star Wars, and for that I am thankful. May the 4th be with you, as it is always with me.
Wonderful insight and a very thoughtful response!
